Thanksgiving Morning, November 27, 2014

Walk or run or “trot” your way to a lively and fun Thanksgiving morning for the entire family at the first annual 5K Turkey Trot benefiting both the Rianda House and the St. Helena Public Library.

You are encouraged to preregister! Until preregistration closes on Friday, November 21st, tickets are $35 for adults and $15 for children under 12 years old. Registration forms are available at either Rianda House or the St. Helena Library’s front desk. Or simply register and pay online at www.shpl.org/supportyourlibrary. T-shirts and books will be given to the first 75 entrants, so register now!

On Thanksgiving morning, registration will take place in Rianda House’s parking lot between 9:00 and 10:00 am. Tickets will be $40 for adults and $20 for children under 12 years old.

The Turkey Trot will begin from Rianda House’s parking lot at 10:00 am; meandering through west-side neighborhoods, the route is about 3 miles long. Cliff bars and bottled water will be available to all Turkey Trotters.

Here is a rare opportunity to enter the world of Lucy and Ellen Begay, mother and daughter, who weave traditional Navajo rugs. Gary Beaudoin, an art collector from Oregon, will display eight stunning rugs and talk about the artistic and cultural weaving tradition of the Navajo. Passed from generation to generation, textile weaving is deeply emblematic of Navajo culture. Beaudoin’s beautiful book, Unbroken Web: The Art of Ellen & Lucy Begay, will be available for purchase and signing.

The Wave of Hope project debuted In May 2014 by Sharon Dawson, an award-winning photographer and painter who resides in Middletown. The large black-and-white images show everyday people who have gone through difficult times and come out on the other side. Dawson just received the Marla Ruzicka Humanitarian of the Year Award for her work on the project.

 

After the reception, Sharon will tell stories about some of the people she has photographed and will explain how the project helps to gain compassion for others through understanding.

The Best Early & Rockin’ New Year’s Eve Party in St. Helena!

Kerouac is a rockin’ rhythm-and-blues band that celebrates the best songs of such musical legends as Tina Turner, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Creedance Clearwater, and the Rolling Stones, among others. Kerouac blends Marie-Louise’s driving vocals with a rousing rhythm section and inspired instrumentals. We’re not kidding when we say our library “rocks”––so come on over and boogie on down!

Between dances, you can enjoy sparkling wine and other libations and snacks. Kids are welcome but may wish to join other kids in the Children’s Room. While the event is free, a suggested donation of $25 per person will help defray the cost of this program offered to the community by the Friends & Foundation, St. Helena Public Library.

On a serene New England campus, emasculated professor George (Richard Burton) and his rancorous wife Martha (Elizabeth Taylor) turn an evening of cocktails into an unrelenting onslaught of wrenching disclosures and bellowed epithets. Soon, the couple’s guests––junior professor Nick (George Segal) and his wife, Honey (Sandy Dennis)––get sucked into the vortex of the warring duo’s unbounded fury. Adapted from the play by Edward Albee. Taylor won an Oscar for Best Actress and Dennis won Best Supporting Actress, along with three other awards and eight other Oscar nominations. The Best Early & Rockin’ New Year’s Eve Party in St. Helena!

Kerouac is a rockin’ rhythm-and-blues band that celebrates the best songs of such musical legends as Tina Turner, Grace Slick, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Aretha Franklin, Creedance Clearwater, and the Rolling Stones, among others. Kerouac blends Marie-Louise’s driving vocals with a rousing rhythm section and inspired instrumentals. We’re not kidding when we say our library “rocks”––so come on over and boogie on down!

Between dances, you can enjoy sparkling wine and other libations and snacks. Kids are welcome but may wish to join other kids in the Children’s Room. While the event is free, a suggested donation of $25 per person will help defray the cost of this program offered to the community by the Friends & Foundation, St. Helena Public Library.
