St. Helena Library's Teen Room Named for Dr. George Wood

AUG '06:
The Wood Teen Room has recently been upgraded with six DiscoverStations by UserFul., Inc. A Linux-based, vendor-managed product, the DiscoverStations are constantly updated, upgraded and patched by UserFul to keep them up-to-date and problem-free.

Each of the machines provides access to the Internet, the Library catalog as well as offering the OpenOffice (a Microsoft Office file compatible) suite which includes presentation, spreadsheet and word processing applications.

Use of the teen area is limited to young people ages 13-19 with three additional DiscoverStations in the Children's area for those 8 - 12 year olds. Two special AWE Literacy Workstations for kids less than 8 years old are located next to the entrance to the picture book room.

JUL '99: The Wood Teen Room had only been in operation a few days when the below picture was taken in July, 1999. The six computers pictured below were part of a Library Services and Technology grant received by the Library.

CHILDREN'S SERVICES AND PROGRAMS

The St. Helena Public Library Children's Services Department provides library services to children from infancy through age 18.  Children's services also assists parents, teachers and anyone with an interest in children's literature.

At St. Helena Public Library kids can:

  • Get a library card at any age with a parent's signature or on their own at age sixteen

  • Borrow from an exciting collection of books, magazines, and other materials selected especially for children and young adults

  • Participate in free programs, such as the Summer Reading Program, and Story and Craft Time

  • Talk to the children's librarian to get answers to questions, or find a great book to read next.

Story and Craft Time
The Children's Department offers 3 public Story and Craft Times per week. Tuesdays at 10:30 am, Wednesdays at noon, and Fridays at 10:00 am. No sign-ups are necessary and while the program caters to preschoolers, older children are welcome and have a good time. Spanish Story times are available periodically. Please contact the library to find out availability.

Teachers and Class Visits
Public and private school classes often visit the library on a weekly, biweekly, monthly or yearly basis. Class visits are encouraged so that all students can acquire library cards and acquaint themselves with their public library, learning important research skills and browsing techniques.

Teachers are encouraged to inform library staff when they assign a project that will impact library services so that librarians can adequately prepare and help make student library use as successful as possible. Teachers are always welcome to call for help gathering books for specific curriculum needs.

Children's Librarian
Leslie Stanton, the Children’s Services Librarian, loves children’s books and welcomes ideas to expand the children’s collection or to increase and refine the library’s services. You can reach her by calling the library (707)963-5244 or e-mail leslie@shpl.org . Also available for questions, comments and help are Linda Struve who works mornings in the children’s room and afternoons in adults, Jill Wood in the afternoon, and Steven Smith on Saturdays.       TOP
