Board of Trustees of the St. Helena Public Library

Minutes of the Meeting of March 10, 2010

The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order at 5 p.m.   Trustee president Dr. Darter, Lynda Burton, Bonnie Long, Susan Swan and Julie Dickson were present, as was Friends representative Kelly Wheaton and acting Library Director Leslie Stanton.

A motion to approve the consent items was seconded and passed.  The minutes of the meeting of February 10, 2010 were approved.

Acting Library Director’s Report.  The Larry Zack sculpture of a boy and girl was installed today at the front entrance.

Remodel report.  “Project Manager” Leslie gave an overview of progress to date and pending activity.  Painters were delayed due to insurance documentation requirements, but are about to begin.  The staff workroom will be repainted although not included in the original plans; the children’s area will not.  The ceiling will not be repainted; new ceiling lighting fixtures and necessary soffits will be installed.  Carpeting will be installed shortly.  There will be a special walk-off mat at the rear door.  The breathability of the carpet tiles is expected to eliminate the longstanding mold problem.  Heath of Hopley has been effectively addressing shelving needs.

Phone update.  The issue of the phantom line, which arose when the circulation desk was removed, has not been resolved by the phone company repair people.  Randy has been very helpful in dealing with day-to-day phone concerns.

JuneFest – Wednesday, June 16.  This event will also serve as the “open house” contemplated to launch the newly-renovated interior.  Robyn Orsini is chair of the organizing committee, which will include Lynda as trustee representative, and one or two foundation representatives.  The foundation will be “featured” and introduced, and community leaders who support library endeavors will be recognized.  The Napa Valley Vintners will be invited to participate, as our new neighbors and collaborators.  Del Britton was suggested as master of ceremonies.

St. Helena Public Library Foundation.  Dr. Darter reported that the funds formerly controlled by the city have been received in the foundation’s account.  Trustees thanked him and Lynda and Bonnie for their longstanding diligent efforts to achieve this laudable end.

Friends of the Library.   Kelly reported that the DVD cleaning machine funded by the Friends was recently demonstrated.  The Friends intend that book sales will be their major source of revenue, and to that end a permanent location for full-time sales by volunteers will be sought.  Since book donations are not being accepted during the renovation, there will be a push for them in coming months, possibly with a request for JuneFest attendees to “Bring a Bag of Books.”  Friends volunteers will be available to work the day of JuneFest, but not to organize it.

Napa Valley Wine Library Association.  Julie reported that a segment of the board is addressing a Wikipedia project to provide comprehensive data on Napa Valley wineries; others are committed to sustaining the traditional activities of the association:  the annual tasting for members, the twice-annual REPORT, and educational seminars.

St. Helena Historical Society.  The book release party for “Images of America:  St. Helena” by the St. Helena Historical Society & Mariam Hansen is scheduled for this Sunday,  March 14, at the Charles Krug Winery from 2 to 4 p.m.

Trustees expressed the hope that Jennifer and her baby are well and resting.  The meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
