Board of Trustees of the St. Helena Public Library
Minutes of the Meeting of December 13, 2006
The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order by Dr. Darter at 5 p.m. Trustee Chairman Dr. Darter, Lynda Burton, Julie Dickson, and Bonnie Long were present, as were Friends of the Library president Dolores Torrigino, and Library Director Larry Hlavsa. Absent: Gwen Becker.
A motion to approve the consent items was seconded and passed. There was no November 8 meeting due to lack of a quorum. Minutes of the meeting of October 11th were approved as mailed.
Library Director’s Report
Browsing Collection. Larry reported that the “locals only” collection will launch in January. Materials will need to be identified on the spine, and either a sticker with a title we create (short, interesting!) or purchased stickers are being considered. Once materials’ time in the browsing collection is over, the sticker will be removed and they will move to the regular collection. A discussion ensued about refreshments/coffee being permitted in the library (many other libraries now allow/encourage this.)
Interior Design project. Page and Moris will next conduct meetings on Wednesday, January 10, 2007. Larry will ask that plans be submitted prior to that date to allow review and development of questions.
Tweed Trust Chiles Valley property. The city finance director has reported that certain expenses have accrued in connection with the city’s taking title to the property. The board directed Larry to ask that these expenses be detailed, and that the particulars of the appraisal currently being prepared and documents concerning the marketing of the property be made available to it, in a manner which maintains appropriate confidentiality.
Resolutions. Following discussion, the board unanimously approved the following resolutions:
RESOLUTION 2006-11 Authorizing Certificate of Appreciation for Jule Grant
RESOLUTION 2006-12 Authorizing Special Library Board of Trustees Meeting on January 10, 2007 (Page & Moris presentation on interior re-design recommendations)
Friends of the Library. Dolores enumerated recent donations, including gifts from the Carpy Foundation and the White Barn. The current newsletter, under the new editorship of Robin Orsini, will be mailed this week. Larry added that its format will allow easy posting on the SHPL Web site.
Wine Library Association. Julie reported that the joint holiday gathering with the Historical Society on December 5th was a full house and most enjoyable. In March or April, another evening event will introduce films by St. Helena High School students on pioneer families. Editors for the transcripts of the Heintz oral histories will be sought in the new year. The 2007 tasting on August 12th -- the association’s 45th annual tasting for members – will feature Cabernet Sauvignon with pourers arranged by sub-appellation within the Napa Valley.
Historical Society. In Gwen’s absence, Larry reported that the society now has its own phone line, and that volunteers are staffing the collection each Tuesday.
The meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
