Board of Trustees of the St. Helena Public Library

Minutes of the Meeting of February 8, 2006

The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order by Dr. Darter at 5:05  p.m.  Trustee Chairman Dr. Darter, Gwen Becker, Julie Dickson and Bonnie Long were present, as was Friends of the Library President Dolores Torrigino and Library Director Larry Hlavsa.

A motion to approve the consent items was seconded and passed.  Minutes of the meeting of January 11th were approved as mailed.

Library Director’s Report

St. Helena High School Yearbooks.  The addition to the collection of a complete photocopied set is anticipated; they will also be scanned at some future date by the Historical Society.

ILL isssues.  The software interface problems continue; efforts are being made to relieve the time-consuming aspects .

Theft detection system.  The current system is somewhat problematic; however current losses are minimal and replacement/repair very costly.

Staff attrition.  Long-term temporary employee Sheri Bro is leaving to move out of state; she will not be replaced at this time.

Internet capacity increasing.  Our Internet provider, Fischer Computer Systems, Inc. is adding substantially more capacity which the library may use when not needed by other customers.

Development of Adams Street Property.   Dr. Darter and Julie Dickson will participate as subcommittee members at its meeting of March 14th, when the three developers under consideration will present proposals.  A drawing developed by the Napa Valley Wine Library executive committee, proposing a combination of preserved viewshed vineyard, park, and parking/library buffer zone was deemed attractive by the trustees, but they concluded that a straight one-third acre conservation easement for the back corner of vineyard would be easier to request and to seek via the Land Trust.  Larry will consult with Bert about how the determination of the trustees, NVWLA board, Friends, and others to secure a conservation easement for the viewshed vineyard be could be communicated to the participating developers as early as possible.  The St. Helena Star, in response to a letter from Bob Long, may seek to interview Dr. Darter and Julie about the library’s position vis-à-vis the Adams Street development.

Library interior re-design proposal.  Interior design library consultants Beverly Morris and Kathryn Page have submitted a fee estimate of $15,800 for this project.  Larry will consult references for the firm.

Friends of the Library.  Dolores reported that renewals are coming in nicely, and that donations in Wilma’s memory have been received.

Wine Library Association.  Julie reported the first board meeting under the new set of officers will be February 22nd. The annual tasting for members is scheduled for Sunday, August 13th.

St. Helena Historical Society.  Gwen distributed a calendar of events through September.  The “Museum for a Day” Sunday, February 19th offers numerous displays and activities;  the “launch event” Sunday, April 23rd will offer members and supporters a chance to identify what they’d like to see in the proposed future  St. Helena History Center.  Larry announced that although he is no longer an regular member of the board, he will serve, in his capacity as Library Director, as an "ex officio" member which gives him voting rights.

The meeting adjourned at 5:45 p.m.
