Board of Trustees of the St. Helena Public Library

 

Minutes of the Meeting of November 9, 2005

 

Dr. Darter called the regular meeting of the Board of Trustees to order at 5 p.m. Trustee Chairman Dr. Darter, Gwen Becker, Lynda Burton, and Bonnie Long were present. Library Director, Larry Hlavsa, was also present.

 

A motion to approve the consent items was seconded and passed. Minutes of the meeting of October 12th were approved as mailed.

 

Library Director's Report:

 

Sonitrol: The board encouraged the director to continue to research the feasibility of changing to the "sound"- based Sonitrol burglar alarm system. He will contact the Director of Maintenance, Steve Bratt, at the St. Helena Unified School District office to ascertain the number of false alarms they have had to pay for and the reasons for them.

 

TBR Request: Larry and Randy Fischer are reviewing the ages of the computers and making plans for using TBR monies for replacement at this time.

 

Tweed Trust Update: The Board decided to have Larry contact the PUC attorney to help with the transfer of title. He will contact Diane, the city attorney, to set up a trust document similar to that of the Wood Trust. Larry will meet with the City Manager and City Finance Director to explain the monies we will be receiving and our desire to manage them in the same way that was done with the Wood Trust. Larry will contact attorney Carol Sobezak of Coombs & Dunlap for a meeting to begin the set up of our Foundation.

 

Resolution 2005-05 One Time 2006 Holiday Closings: was presented, moved, seconded and approved.

 

Resolution 2005-06 Annual Thanksgiving Eve Closing: was presented, moved, seconded and approved.

 

Resolution 2005-07 Approving Library Policies:  was presented, moved, seconded and approved

 

CARL v.5.2:  The SNAP library software upgrade will take place on November 21st. It will allow for sending notification of overdues and holds by email.

 

Tape Transcription Project: The Wine Library Board approved a $10,000 budget to begin the process of transcribing and moving to CD approximately 20 important tapes from the 347 tapes in the Heintz and the NVWL collection. An additional 20 tapes will be transferred to CD but will have no transcriptions done. This project is being outsourced to a Boston firm which provides transcriptions services.

 

Friends of the Library: (Larry Hlavsa) The Summer Reading Program will utilize the theme and materials developed by the California State Library.  On November 8th the Friends board approved a $650.00 grant to subscribe to TumbleBooks.com audio e-books and picture books. This is a one-year trial subscription.

 

St. Helena Historical Society: (Gwen Becker) The Cemetery Tour was a great success. Three new board members have been invited to join the board. Plans for a launch party for the St. Helena History Center capital campaign are being made for late January 2006.
