The regular meeting of the Board of Trustees was called to order by Dr. Darter at 5 p.m.  Trustee Chairman Dr. Darter, Gwen Becker, Bob Brownscombe, Lynda Burton, and Julie Dickson were present.  Friends of the Library President Tom Burke was present, as was Library Director Larry Hlavsa.

A motion to approve the consent items was seconded and passed.  Minutes of the meeting of December 8th were approved.

Library Director’s Report

Discussion of Development of Adams Street Property.  Larry welcomed City Manager Bert Johannson to participate in the review of the action of the City Council at its meeting January 11th attended by Larry Hlavsa, Robert Brownscombe, Lynda Burton, Julie Dickson, and Tom Burke. Discussion ensued of appropriate steps to see that the library’s needs are recognized in the ongoing RFP process.  Bert summoned Jonathan Goldman of the public works department to the meeting, who reported that he could produce drawings of the parcel demonstrating how the goals of assuring space for future library expansion, protection of the view corridor and preservation of a viable piece of heritage vineyard could be achieved.  Dr. Darter summarized that we would seek from the City Council at its January 25th meeting the assurance that the portion of the parcel we identified be excluded from consideration by the developers offering bids.  Groups supporting future library expansion and those willing to donate funds to secure a conservation easement from the city for the heritage vineyard will be consulted.  The board of trustees will meet in special session Monday, January 17 at 5 p.m. to consider the drawings and finalize its case statement.

Statistical Reporting.  Larry reported that a new program offers more succinct “bill list” reporting, among other advantages. Future bill lists will be presented to the trustees in this format.

Re-writing the 2002 SHHS/City Agreement.  Since the Historical Society’s initial agreement was patterned after that of the Napa Valley Wine Library Association and the SHHS has different ultimate goals, new language is being drafted.  Books would remain under library control but the SHHS would assume control (cataloging, processing, public access) over other materials. The draft will go first to the SHHS board and then to the Library Board of Trustees.

Cataloging project.  Bobbie Vierra will wrap up the project by January 31st.  The last 25% of both collections was completed and records were enhanced on materials previously catalogued. Thanks go to Maryll Telegdy, our temporary professional cataloger, who worked on this project over the past several months.

Kids’ Art Show January 10th.  The event drew 75 people and was a great success! The display space schedules in 2005 and 2006 will have three months reserved each year for library exhibits such as this one.

Friends of the Library Report.  Tom reported an increase in investment holdings and generous donations late in 2004.  The Volunteer Appreciation Brunch will be held March 10th.

Wine Library Association Report.  Julie reported that “Barney’s Backyard” magnums had been given/promised to the following local organizations raising money for education:  St. Helena Public Schools (combined auction), Kiwanis, Rotary, St. Helena Coop Nursery, Saints Athletic Assn., St. Helena Montessori School, Napa Valley Museum.  Suggestions are sought for other appropriate recipients.

St. Helena Historical Society ReportGwen distributed a schedule of upcoming activities, and added that a “Museum for a Day” at the Native Sons Hall was set for Sunday, February 20.

The meeting adjourned at 6:10 p.m.
